Snowpocalypse 2014!

February 2, 2014

In surely one of the great natural disasters of all time, this past week Atlanta was hit with…two inches of snow! Being a Midwesterner for the first 2/3 of my life, I can understand the reaction of the national media, as a major metropolitan area of >5 million residents was brought to its knees by what most would consider a relatively inconsequential weather system. However, it was a ‘perfect storm’ (no pun intended) of circumstances that combined to create this unfortunate situation: the snow/ice line moving north of initial projections, poor planning by fractured state and local governments, communication that was too little too late, the timing of when the worst hit, and most all schools and companies dumping everyone on the roads at the same time. We were lucky in that I was working from home that day, Suzy’s school let out early enough that she was home before the worst hit, and that we were able to secure a ride for Emily and Elisabeth that got them most of the way home (due to accidents blocking the road, they had to walk the last quarter-mile). But I’ve heard plenty of stories of friends with 10 hour commutes, and people spending the night sleeping in offices or stores. Hopefully, lessons were learned that will prevent a recurrence in the future, but only time will tell.
